POCO Becomes An Independent Brand; Pocophone X2 May Be A Mid-Ranger

Exciting times are ahead of POCO, it seems. Xiaomi’s Global VP has just announced that POCO became an independent brand. On top of that, the POCO X2 surfaced on Geekbench.

Manu Kumar Jain, Xiaomi’s Global VP, has announced via Twitter that POCO is now an independent brand. POCO, as most of you know, started as a Xiaomi sub-brand. The company only really released one phone thus far.

The Pocophone F1 aka POCO F1 was the name of that device, and it arrived in 2018. The Pocophone F1 (as it’s referred to in most global markets) managed to become quite popular almost instantly.

This phone was touted to be a new flagship killer, due to its high-end specs, and really low price tag. The Pocophone F2 was supposed to launch last year, but that did not happen. Well, it seems like it’s coming this year, though, more on that in a second.

POCO is now an independent brand, similar to HONOR

Manu Kumar Jain wished POCO all the best in the future. Just to be clear, POCO will not operate as a separate entity, but it’s still owned by Xiaomi. The source does not mention that, but the same happened with HONOR, for example. It is a separate entity, but still owned by Huawei.

In any case, the Pocophone F2 surfaced on Geekbench under the POCO F2 name. This listing suggests that the device will ship with 8GB of RAM, and Android 10 out of the box.

On top of Android 10, you’ll get Xiaomi’s MIUI 10 skin. Despite the fact POCO became an independent brand, it will still use Xiaomi’s software.

The Pocophone F2 may be a mid-range phone

What’s interesting here, though, is that Geekbench suggests that the POCO F2 will be a mid-range phone. The Snapdragon 730G is listed here, which is something we can see based on its motherboard.

The Pocophone F1 shipped with Qualcomm’s most powerful SoC in 2018, the Snapdragon 845. The Pocophone F2 is expected to do the same, but based on this listing, it will not.

It is possible that POCO plans to release more than one variant of the device, though. We do hope that will be the case, as pretty much everyone expects the Pocophone F2 to be a flagship-grade phone.

The device managed to score 547 points in the single-core test on Geekbench. It scored 1,767 points in the multi-core test, by the way. Don’t take these scores seriously, as it’s possible this is just an early build of the device, such results are not indicative of performance at all.

The Pocophone F2 is expected to arrive this year. We’re not sure when will that happen, but the Pocophone F1 did launch in August 2018. The same may happen with its successor, but two years later.
