The sequel to Insomniac’s 2018 Spider-Man game is no doubt one of the greatest games of the new generation. The expanded world of websligning combat that follows on directly from the first game explores “the new guy”, Miles Morales, of Into The Spider-Verse fame along with a whole host of enemies and allies to keep you entertained for hours.

The game is not a long one and if you follow the main storyline, it should give you around 8 to 10 hours of gameplay. But the endless side quests, challenges, and collectables, not to mention the expansive upgrade system to explore, deliver many more solid hours of action.

To get the most out of the game, we’ve put together this guide to have you playing like a pro in no time.

Moves

Obviously, combat plays a huge role in the game but movement, in general, is basically what the game’s software engine centres around. You actually start the game mid-cross-city run, which launches you right into the action so you know it’s key.

In order to keep mobile while on the fly and streamline your travel, you can hold circle while wall running to move quickly around corners. Reach the edge of a building and miles will automatically shoot a web to wrap quickly around the corner.

If you want to redirect in midair, get comfortable with using L2 to slow time and aim your web shooter wherever you want to go. Handy for precision movements and quick escapes.

Use enemies against each other by unlocking abilities which enable you to use the web-shooters to throw them around. Suspended enemies can also be turned into web bombs (if you’ve upgraded this skill) by hanging them from above with a perch takedown. Move away and you’ll be prompted to web bomb them, dropping them next to other enemies and dealing damage. Very useful in stealth missions.

Speaking of stealth, it’s always useful to practice ceiling takedowns, especially in missions where you don’t want to be alerting anyone to your presence. Crawl across the ceiling and target your chosen enemy before pressing square to pull them up and web them to the ceiling. Try this with camouflage if you want to be certain of remaining hidden.

Gadgets and Upgrades

Miles has fewer gadgets than Peter did in the prequel game but they’re very powerful and useful when used properly. The gravity well is your best friend here as it pulls enemies into a single mass when thrown. Upgrade this as soon as you can to take down large groups of enemies and disarm them all at once. The remote mines and holo-drone are less useful but can still come in handy when taking on large amounts of enemies though they do take some planning.

The skill tree is where you can spend skill points to unlock and upgrade your attacks and abilities. You’ve got three branches to follow: camouflage skills, venom skills, and combat skills with a row of challenge skills below that.

Venom attacks are the most powerful in the game so spend time developing and unlocking these. Synaptic breakdown will double the length of your venom stun so make sure to unlock this as soon as possible. You can do so from level four and will only cost you one skill point. Use venom attacks basically whenever you have a charge as it will make it way easier to plough through groups of enemies.

Camouflage is super useful for stealth missions and avoiding unnecessary combat if you’re low on health. It’s useful to focus on the upgrades that allow you to stay in camouflage mode for as long as possible. Unseen Strike is a particularly good upgrade as it then won’t cost you camouflage energy when using venom attacks.

Suit powers are how you customise the look and feel of your character. Some suits are given to you as you progress through the game while others have to be bought with tech parts and activity tokens. Try equipping Induction Mesh and Venom Momentum together to draw venom power with each hit and perform a venom stun with every sixth hit. These two together will have you feeling basically unstoppable in hand-to-hand.

Side Quests and Unlocks

The skill tree, however, is not the only place you can upgrade your moves. Peter’s challenges are a useful way to earn more skills and specific moves that are great for targeting specific enemies and should be completed early on.

Finding the time capsules located around the city will also give you an easy way to get ability tokens. Standing in front of each one and pressing triangle will net you a quick three tokens. There are 15 in total but they can be tricky to find.

To move quickly through challenges, you can ignore the game’s fast travel menu and press the PlayStation button on the control to move into card view. The card menu will suggest challenges and quests you’ve yet to complete and selecting one of these will spawn you right where you need to go to get started.

Finally, don’t forget that you can unlock the Into the Spider-Verse gameplay. First, you’ll need to purchase the animated suit which you can do at level 13 with 18 activity tokens and four tech parts. Then attach the Bam! Pow! Wham! visor mod and the Vibe the Verse mod to give you 24 fps animation and stylized comic book attack responses. To do the relaxed fall pose from the film, make sure you’ve got enough height while free falling, hold square then hold in L3 and tap up. It takes some timing to get this right but once you’ve done it you’re basically playing in your very own film.
