Qualcomm Teases Its Next Wearables Processor

Qualcomm is the company that’s responsible for the popular Snapdragon SoCs that are powering a bunch of phones around the world. Not only are its processors powering phones, they’re also powering smartwatches. Now, Qualcomm just teased its newest wearables processor.

The company posted a short and sweet tweet showing a video teaser for the new silicon. It was accompanied by the text “The clock is ticking on something big.” That’s pretty ironic because the processors are meant to go into smaller devices.

We don’t know too much about this new Qualcomm wearables processor

Qualcomm has been making processors for wearable devices for several years now. Before them, smartwatches were using older phone processors like the Snapdragon 400. Back in 2016, the company released its first processor for smartwatches, the Snapdragon 2100. This was built to be more power-efficient to help the fledgling smartwatch market.

Since then, the company has released the Snapdragon 3100, Snapdragon 4100, and snapdragon 4100+. These were all made with tiny screens and tiny batteries in mind.

The most recent one, the Snapdragon 4100+, uses a 12nm process, and it also uses a co-processor to help it with auxiliary processing. The first watch to use that processor was released back in September of last year.

Now, Qualcomm is going to be launching the next generation of its wearables processor, and we’re all anxious to see what it is and what it can do. In a tweet, the company showed off a short video that doesn’t really tell us anything. It shows an uncanny and trippy animation of chips.

At the end of the video, however, it reveals something a bit more interesting. We see the processor gradually forming, but the video ends right before we can see the name. At the very last instant, there was something interesting. If you look closely, it almost looks like there’s a “+” symbol.

This is, of course, speculation, however. You’ll want to take this with a grain of salt. The processor that’s most likely going to come is the Snapdragon 5100.

As time goes on, we’ll hear more about this processor and how it will help boost the power of future smartwatches.
