Samsung is due to launch two new foldable smartphones this year, one each in the Fold and Flip series. There are indications that the two devices may arrive sooner than expected. Those rumors were supported by reports that the Korean firm has already started the development of the Galaxy Z Fold 3 firmware. Now, another report claims that firmware development for the Galaxy Z Flip 2 has also begun.
According to SamMobile, Samsung has started the development of the Galaxy Z Flip 2 firmware with the model number SM-F711. Well, they revealed the device’s model number way back in February itself. Now they are claiming that firmware development has begun as well.
The same source had previously claimed that the upcoming clamshell folding Galaxy smartphone will be available in light violet, green, black, and beige colors. The device will reportedly come with 128 and 256GB storage options though there’s no word on its RAM capacity. Moreover, the Galaxy Z Flip 2 will ship with Android 11 and One UI 3.5 out of the box.
Earlier reports suggest that the Galaxy Z Flip 2 will retain the 6.7-inch display from its predecessor. However, it will boast a larger 1.83-inch display on the outside. The device will reportedly pack two different battery units with a rated capacity of 2,300mAh and 903mAh. In other words, expect a total capacity in the 3,200-3,300mAh range. Of course, it’s very early and hence the accuracy of these reports cannot be confirmed. However, the Galaxy Z Flip 2 is slowly starting to take shape.
Samsung launched the original Galaxy Z Flip in February last year and followed it with a 5G variant in late July. The Galaxy Z Fold 2, on the other hand, arrived in August, alongside the Galaxy Note 20 series. This year, though, the company is said to announce the two foldables on the same stage and sooner than expected.
Earlier reports have suggested that the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 2 will be unveiled in the second half of this year. However, recent reports claim the devices may arrive as early as July. This claim is aided by the fact that firmware development for both devices has begun around the same time.
Of course, Samsung has yet to say a word on when it will unveil its next-gen foldable smartphones. But since it doesn’t have a Galaxy Note phone this year, earlier arrival of the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 2 seems more than likely. Watch out this space for more information about Samsung’s upcoming foldables as the company progresses with the development of the new devices.
