Samsung To Produce Its First Rollable Displays Later This Year



When it comes to foldable screen phones, Samsung holds the numero-uno position in that niche. Take a leap in another direction, the latest report by The Elec confirms that Samsung will begin production of its first rollable displays later this year.

As per information shared by the Vice President of Samsung Display Kwon-Young Choi, along with taking steps to expand leadership in the foldable smartphones category, Samsung will roll out its first rollable displays this year.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 is easily the best foldable device that anyone can opt for. Furthermore, it can be recommended to anyone looking for a premium foldable phone.

Besides, on multiple occasions this year, rollable displays and phones have been showcased by different brands, including LG and OPPO. But Samsung joining this list adds more credibility to this new category.

Coming back to the rollable display by Samsung, VP Choi did not reveal much information if we can expect a rollable phone from Samsung this year.

While the VP refrained from sharing that information, reports coming from South Korea suggest Samsung is planning to release a rollable phone in 2022.

For foldable, Samsung will adopt variable refresh rate and low-power technologies

It is a good sign that Samsung is taking steps ahead in the rollable display segment. But it has not deviated its attention from foldable. Notably, as per the latest reports, Samsung will adopt different technologies to expand its foldable segment.

Technologies including variable refresh rate, low power displays, etc. will be embedded entering the OLED market. For large-sized displays, Samsung will develop a quantum display (QD) to enter the premium sector.

Samsung will continue to deliver LCD at the request of its customers. FYI, Samsung initially prepared to end LCD production back in 2020. But now it will continue its production on requests of Samsung Electronics and other customers.

Samsung wants to move its production over to OLED displays as more and more devices are using these panels. Thanks to this, Samsung performed extremely well in Q4 2020 and recorded its highest quarterly earnings.

To be specific, it posted sales of 9.96 trillion Won, along with an operating income of 1.75 trillion won. According to The Elec, this is 8 times the profit for the same period a year ago.

At the moment, it is not clear whether we will see a Samsung rollable phone this year or not. However, LG has already confirmed that it is working on its rollable phone simply called “Rollable.”
