Samsung’s Next Android Flip Phone May Use Dual Rear Cameras

Samsung is planning to follow up on its Android-powered W2018 flip phone (pictured above) from last year with the W2019, one known industry insider from China said Wednesday. The device is code-named “Project Lykan” and will use a dual-camera setup on the back, thus delivering a significant upgrade over its predecessor, as per the same source. No additional details on the matter have been given but should the South Korean tech giant follow its established release schedule, the W2019 is likely to be announced in late 2019 and be made available for purchase exclusively in China, a market where Samsung faced tremendous challenges in recent years but also one that still responds to niche consumer electronics such as flip phones.

At launch, the W2018 not only became the phone with the brightest aperture in the industry but also debuted in the form of the first contemporary handset with a variable-aperture camera. As both of those features ended up being part of the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus, the W2019 may also provide a glimpse at what consumers can expect from Samsung’s Galaxy S10 lineup early next year. The main cameras of the Galaxy S9-series devices and the W2018 were virtually identical; they were 12-megapixel modules with a pixel size of 1.4 microns mounted behind lenses capable of alternating between f/1.5 and f/2.4 apertures. The second camera that’s expected to be featured on the back of the W2019 may be another 12-megapixel, 1µm affair with an f/2.4 lens, much like the supporting module of the Galaxy S9 Plus.

As all previous generations of Samsung‘s W-branded devices were flagships, the W2019 is likely to follow suit, i.e. feature Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 chip and at least 6GB of RAM, as well as 64GB of storage space. The Galaxy Note 9 is the company’s next high-end Android offering, having recently been scheduled for an official announcement on August 9.
