Spotify Is Working On Local Music Playback For Android App

The latest tip from Jane Manchun Wong highlights that Spotify is working on local music playback support on Android.

This means that users will soon be able to play locally stored music or audio files via the Spotify app. This feature is a sort of an extension of the previously available feature.

However, there was a limitation to the previously available feature. Basically, it required the users to sync the songs on the same local networks as their desktop’s Spotify app. Moreover, it is only available for Premium accounts.

Among the variety of music streaming apps available at our disposal, Spotify is one of the best, if not the best, music streaming platforms. It not only includes music, but it has probably one of the largest collections of podcasts to listen to.

Even though internet availability is not much of an issue these days, it is always good to have a collection of songs stored in the device storage for places where there is no internet connectivity.

It seems like Spotify will soon allow users to play these locally stored audio files via the app. A screenshot shared by Wong shows a toggle that can be enabled to ‘Show device files.’

Spotify local music playback support is currently being tested only on the Android app

As you probably know, Google Play Music is gone for good. Although YouTube Music has been prepped well by Google as an alternative to the Play Music app, it still lacks several features.

Spotify may want to cash in their chances and bring this feature, making it much easier for users to get on board with their local files.

Currently, this Spotify local music playback support is being tested only on the Android app. Wong said that she is not aware of the feature being tested for the iOS app so far.

One thing to note that there is no clarity whether Spotify would allow casting of locally stored music or not. The ‘Show device files’ option will show up all the locally stored audio files in Your Library.

Apparently, the app will scan for audio files stored in your device’s memory and show in the ‘Your Library’ section on the app. Note that this Spotify local music playback option is under testing.

This means that it may take some time before it rolls out to a wider audience. Well, recently Spotify started rolling out the Stories feature on Android and iOS to a limited group of artists.

Through this, users will be able to share snippets of songs or album art. And even snippets of their playlists as well.
