The NFL wants to launch its own Streaming Service, Too

As if there weren’t already enough streaming services, the NFL reportedly wants to launch its own streaming service. Reportedly called “NFL Plus”, because every streaming service needs to have a “+” attached to it.

This report comes from Ben Fischer of the Sports Business Journal, who reported that the league is moving forward with plans to offer its own streaming service. Rumors of this started swirling earlier this year.

NFL Plus will reportedly cost about $5 per month, but that price could change, as Fischer noted in his report. It’ll center around the mobile streaming rights for live games. Currently, fans can watch games on their phones and tablets for free with the Yahoo Sports and NFL app. As well as through various cellular carriers. Those deals have now expired, allowing the NFL to explore their own streaming service.

NFL Plus will likely come in July 2022

The NFL is expecting to launch the service this July. And it’ll include live games as well as additional content and even radio broadcasts of games, podcasts, team-created content and much more.

The timing of this news is pretty interesting, seeing as the NFL owners’ meeting is currently taking place in Arizona, and while the NFL is thinking about selling its Media Division along with the rights to NFL Sunday Ticket. Amazon and Apple are currently the rumored destinations for Sunday Ticket. Which would help boost Prime Video and Apple TV+ quite a bit. Amazon already hosts some Thursday Night games on Prime Video.

Apple TV Plus has already expressed interest in all of the leagues available rights. If they do get them, that would include the NFL Network, NFL.com, NFL RedZone and now NFL Plus. In addition to out-of-market games, that would be a huge boon for Apple TV+, which is still just $5 per month.
