The YouTube Desktop Site Is Now More Workable On Touchscreens

YouTube made some changes to its desktop site recently that make it more usable on touchscreens.

While it was always possible to use the desktop site with a touchscreen device like say, a chromebook or other type of laptop, it wasn’t as good of an experience as using the normal mouse and keyboard to navigate around.

These new changes won’t exactly surpass the normal navigation methods, but it does make using the YouTube desktop site on touchscreens more friendly. And really, that’s better than nothing at all especially given the amount of laptops that have touschreens these days.

The YouTube desktop site on touchscreens now shows a three dot menu

One of the bigger changes you’ll notice is that there is now a persistently visible three dot menu when using anything with a touchscreen. Whether it be an Android tablet, an iPad, or a chromebook or laptop that has a touchscreen that you’re using in tablet mode.

The three dot menu was there before, but it wasn’t always visible to users. As YouTube points out, you had to mouse over the video thumbnails with a mouse and keyboard before this menu would show up.

Now, the three dot menu is visible under each video thumbnail. Which means it’s always in view and will always be easy to see.

Icons are also now bigger than they were before. This not only makes them a little easier to see, but it should make them easier to interact with because they’re bigger and easier to tap with your fingers.

New gestures are here, and watch history has been improved too

There are a handful of other improvements that YouTube has made to the desktop site. For one there are now gestures that you can use to interact with various functions.

You can swipe up to increase a player to fullscreen and you you can swipe down to decrease it to the miniplayer. Just like on Android.

Watch history is also said to be more clearly distinguishable. To be more specific YouTube says you can more easily identify videos that you watched on any given date. Looking for a video that you watched last month? It should be easier to find now.

Lastly it’s also now possible to move videos around in your playlists to better organize them through the move to top and move to bottom feature. All of these changes should be live for everyone at this point.
