These Are The Breakout Mobile Games Of 2021 So Far

App Annie has just released a new report about breakout mobile games for the first quarter of 2021. So far this year has seen the release of new hits, as well as the continued rise of some already available titles.

The report consists mainly of data surrounding top mobile games in the first quarter of 2021 compared to the fourth quarter of 2020. Though it also covers breakout apps in the same manner. One clear thread throughout the report is that people are enamored with the hyper-casual game genre.

These are mobile titles that carry a specific set of traits. They’re very easy to play, yet they don’t require a set amount of time to enjoy. They also don’t require a significant amount of attention. And you can pick them up and put them down in five minutes or less. This makes them extremely approachable, hence the extreme popularity. But there are also breakout games outside of this genre.

Though not hyper-casual, Crash Bandicoot: On The Run! was still one of this year’s breakout games. According to App Annie’s report data, it was #2 in the US. This shouldn’t be surprising given the company behind the game.

The Crash Bandicoot franchise is owned by Activision. And Crash Bandicoot as a franchise has been a huge hit on the PlayStation consoles since the original PS1 more than two decades ago.

It didn’t take long for the official mobile title, which has been designed as an endless runner, to gain popularity. While it didn’t launch in the US first, once it did release within the country it quickly racked up downloads and a high rating on the Play Store.

The game also reached #3 for breakout games in the UK, and it was #1 in Germany. For the US, the #1 breakout game was a title called High Heels. Which tasked players with acquiring heels that were higher and higher as they progress through levels.

High Heels was also #1 in the UK, and #3 worldwide. So it’s safe to say that even globally the game is a big hit with millions upon millions of players.

Call Of Duty: Mobile was #1 in China

Call Of Duty: Mobile was another breakout game in the first quarter of the year. In China it was the number one game with players. Though China was also the only place where CoD: M was on the list.

Perhaps the most impressive though, was League Of Legends: Wild Rift. Which rose to #5 in the US. The mobile adaption of the extremely popular PC MOBA game only released in the Americas a couple of weeks ago as part of the open beta.

Which just goes to show how excited players in the US have been to get their hands on it.
