Veterans Get New Job Search Tools Via ‘Grow With Google’

Google has revealed a new search-based tool and a new Google My Business label intended to assist veterans with finding a career and help users discover businesses that are run by veterans. Beginning with the first of those two, the new search tool utilizes the company’s Talent Cloud Solution and is effectively a way for veterans to narrow down job opportunities based on work they did while serving in the armed forces. Current partners in the program include a wide range of businesses from FedEx Careers to Encompass Health Careers and is very straightforward. A search for the term ‘jobs for veterans’ on any of the company’s search platforms now brings up a web app where servicemembers can look for skill-specific work. The initial search will show all job listing currently available through the tool in the user’s local area. From there, entering a military job code will return results that the candidate might be well-suited for. A user can also add a specific region to the end of their initial search term to find jobs more close to home if the first search isn’t accurate enough.

On the Google My Business side of the new features, business owners who are veterans will now be able to add a ‘Veteran-Led’ attribute to their company page using the “Info” tab on the Google My Business Dashboard. From there, clicking attributes will bring up a search box and a list of attributes. A quick search for “Veteran” should bring up the newly added descriptive term and a click on that will let the business owner interact with the attribute. Clicking the plus symbol, followed by the “Apply” button will add that to the business description. Google takes up to three days to review an attribute before adding it on the user-facing side of a Google search. So it shouldn’t be concerning if the attribute isn’t added right away. Once that’s in place, users who search for a business on Google will be able to see that a location is owned and operated by a veteran.

Both of the features are being added as part of the search giant’s overarching Grow with Google initiative, with the intention of enabling veterans to access more opportunities. The efforts were led by seven-year Air Force veteran and Google Cloud Program Manager Matthew Hudson and worked on by other veterans at the company. However, Google isn’t stopping with the new initiatives at all. In a bid to help even more military personnel, spouses, and veterans develop IT skills, the search giant’s charitable branch – Google.org – is also giving the USO a $2.5 million grant. That will be used to train and offer career guidance in IT support b via the incorporation of the Google IT Support Professional Certificate into the Organizations’ current programs.
