Video Allegedly Shows Off Huawei P30 Pro’s Camera Capabilities

A target=”_blank” rel=”noopener”>video posted on YouTube by Parker Walbeck demonstrates the video quality of an unidentified handset, which could be the Huawei P30 Pro. While Walbeck simply referred to the device as an unreleased smartphone, the content creator provided several hints about the identity of the handset by describing the camera features of the product.

The unreleased smartphone will become available to consumers very soon, and it features multiple camera lenses, one of which is capable of optical zoom. This functionality allows the smartphone to retain image quality even if the camera is zoomed in to a subject within the image. A portion of the video clip also demonstrates the preservation of image quality in the handset’s optical zoom compared to the digital zoom that smartphones commonly use.

The description made by Walbeck of the smartphone is consistent with the recent leaks which suggest that the Huawei P30 Pro will sport three rear cameras, one of which features an 8-megapixel sensor with a periscope lens setup that offers 5x optical zoom and 10x hybrid zoom. However, the content creator noted the smartphone also uses software processing that improves the image quality captured by the device through the digital zoom.

Another important camera feature of the unreleased smartphone is its excellent low-light performance, and Walbeck suggests that the videos and images captured by the handset match the quality of photographs taken by DSLR cameras. Recent reports indicate that the excellent low-light performance of the Huawei P30 Pro is made possible by the device’s Super Spectrum camera, which has a resolution of 40-megapixels with Quad Bayer pixel layout comprised of one red pixel, two yellow pixels, and one blue pixel. Also, the handset also comes with a night mode feature, which allows the user to take long exposure images. The optical image stabilization of the handset also reduces the impact of vibrations on the quality of photographs captured using the night mode.

Background: One of the likely key selling points of the Huawei P30 Pro is its camera performance. Aside from the 40-megapixel main camera and an 8-megapixel shooter with optical zoom, the handset also includes a 20-megapixel wide-angle camera, although unlike the other two shooters, this imaging module lacks optical image stabilization. The handset also includes a time-of-flight 3D sensor, while the front-facing camera will likely come with a 32-megapixel sensor.

Aside from the Huawei P30 Pro, the Chinese tech giant will also reportedly launch the Huawei P30. Both handsets will feature the Kirin 980 chipset, in-display fingerprint sensors, and lenses from Leica. However, the two smartphones differ in terms of RAM capacity, with the Huawei P30 sporting 6GB of RAM and the Huawei P30 Pro featuring 8GB of RAM. Furthermore, the Huawei P30 will likely not feature optical zoom, and its wide-angle camera will have a lower resolution 16-megapixel sensor.

Impact: Many smartphone manufacturers now focus on the camera features and the quality of images captured by their flagship handsets to differentiate their offerings from the competition. The quality of pictures taken by smartphones tend to decrease when users zoom in to their subjects, and handsets often experience difficulty taking photographs at low-light conditions. These new features that Huawei may introduce to the Huawei P30 Pro solve two of the critical issues of smartphone cameras and the company may use these functionalities for marketing its products to consumers.
