Whatsapp Beta Gets Picture-in-Picture Mode For Videos

The latest beta version of the Whatsapp Android application includes a new picture-in-picture mode for playing videos from Instagram and YouTube. This feature has already been available on the iOS version of the messaging app since earlier this year, and this recent development could mean that Android users will get the same functionality in the near future. However, there is no clear word on when the feature will be deployed on the stable version of the Whatsapp Android app.

People will know that this feature is already available once they see a play button displayed in the thumbnail preview of the Instagram and YouTube videos. Users can then press on these previews and a smaller window will appear that will show the video. The Picture-in-Picture mode will allow the users of the chat application to navigate through the app, and even read and reply to messages from other people while watching a video. However, this functionality could still change before its official launch as the messaging platform fixes the bugs present in the beta version of the app. Moreover, this feature only supports Instagram videos and not the Instagram Stories videos.

Whatsapp has been continuously adding features to its chat application within the last few months to improve the services it offers to its users. For example, the messaging platform rolled out improvements to the group chat functionality of the app last May that provided more control to the people who administer a group chat. Other measures that allow Whatsapp to address the misinformation that is being propagated on its platform were also deployed recently, including the reduction in the number of groups that a person can forward a certain message. Whatsapp also added new functionalities that enable businesses to directly communicate with consumers. The addition of a click-to-chat button makes it easier for users to initiate a conversation with a company, while businesses may now use the Whatsapp platform to provide their customers with assistance when resolving a particular issue with a service or product that it offers. These features are a part of Facebook’s continued efforts to monetize its messaging service.
