You Can Use The Galaxy Fold On Sprint & Verizon’s Networks

The long-awaited Samsung Galaxy Fold can now be pre-ordered and the South Korean giant has listed AT&T and T-Mobile as carrier partners. However, if a new report is to go by, the phone is technically not locked to those carriers.

The Galaxy Fold was recently certified by FCC and the folks over at Droid Life dug deeper into the documents to reveal some important information. The Galaxy Fold, bearing the model number SM-F900U, will be able to run on all the main U.S. carriers, per the report. This means that somewhere down the line, Verizon and Sprint customer will also be able to use the Galaxy Fold.

Samsung itself hadn’t revealed any information related to the band and network support and the company’s U.S. website only says that the Galaxy Fold would either work on T-Mobile or AT&T. So, while the phone is technically equipped to support all major carriers, only these two networks will be supported at launch time. However, both the carriers have unlock policies in place so it might be possible to unlock the phone later on.

It remains to be seen if Samsung will also sell an unlocked variant of the Galaxy Fold in the future. To recap, the phone will be released officially on April 26 and that too in limited quantities. As has been reported before, the Galaxy Fold would be marketed as something of a luxury device, which makes total sense as it will cost nearly $2,000 and an average customer doesn’t have that kind of money to splurge on a phone.

The Galaxy Fold has been something of a mystery up until now, with some reports claiming that the inner display of the phone has an unsightly crease towards the middle. Per some early reviews, the crease is surely there but it is quite indiscernible and given that the Galaxy Fold is going to be one of the first foldable smartphones in the market, customers might be willing to let go of this small flaw in return of a phone-tablet hybrid.

The Samsung Galaxy Fold is fueled by the 7nm Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 SoC, which means that it should be pretty snappy. The phone has a total of six cameras, one on the front, two on the inside, and three on the back. The phone has a 7.3-inch internal display and a 4.6-inch external display. The device also supports wireless power-sharing like the recently released Galaxy S10 phones but it is not water resistant.

The Galaxy Fold will compete with Huawei Mate X, which will be fueled by the company’s own Kirin 980 processor. If at $1,980, the price of the Galaxy Fold seems jaw-dropping, Huawei has gone a step ahead and set a price of $2,600 for its foldable offering. Needless to say, the first generation of foldable phones will be more of status symbols and Samsung seems confident about the market response as it is tipped to have some more foldable phones in the pipeline already. In fact, it appears that the company is betting on 5G and foldable phones to remain the number one smartphone vendor for the foreseeable future.
